Eight years ago, when Alejandro, Anastasis and I started Runway, I bought three pens, one for each of us. They’re made of heavy steel with a cover that fits perfectly, and one word is engraved at the end: tenacity. Mine still sits on my desk at home, where I work many nights and weekends. Lately, what we’ve spent years building seems to be moving together more naturally. Customers who once asked us to prove it now just ask for it. The problems that kept me up at night last year are forgotten. It will get hard again, the way it always does, which is probably why I bought the pens in the first place. Someone asked me this week if the pen on my desk was the same one from eight years ago. A few refills in, I told them, but yes.
